Making the Rounds

  • Paid verification comes to Facebook and Instagram. Taking a cue from Twitter, Meta’s new paid verification program is now available in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. Users can pay $11.99 for a blue checkmark and access to priority support.

  • Meta hits pause on Reels Bonus program. The program previously paid creators a flat monthly total based on Reels views. But Meta announced it’s working on a new revenue share program for short-form creators instead.

  • 5 prompts to try with the new AI-powered Bing search engine. Everyone’s raving about the new and improved Bing, but how do you actually use it? This article from Search Engine Journal shares 5 prompts to get you started.

Working With Clients

Social Media Profiles Aren’t Optional Anymore

The first thing any prospective client wants to see is your portfolio.

And while having killer samples can help you get the gig…

There’s another piece of the puzzle you shouldn’t ignore:

Your social media profiles.

Having an online presence that extends beyond an Upwork profile or Gmail address proves that you’re a real professional.

This doesn’t mean you need to be constantly creating content or have a million followers…

But having a fully fleshed out profile on all the major platforms with:

  • What services you provide

  • Any client wins you’ve had

  • Brief backstory

  • And a link to your portfolio (website, Notion workspace, Google doc)

… Is an easy (and free) way to stand out among the sea of other freelancers in 2023.

Think about like this:

If you were a client choosing between two freelancers, where one was easy to find on social media and the other was nonexistent…

Which one would you hire?

All other things being equal, the freelancer who’s present on social media will win every time.

Don’t let that be the reason you lose out on a client to someone else.

From The Copywriting Gig

Why Trigger Moments Make Great Leads

In copywriting, the lead refers to the headline and first few opening paragraphs.

And it’s the most important section in any ad, email, or sales page…

Because its job is to hook the reader and grab their attention.

If it fails, the piece won’t convert.

So… what’s the best way to write an irresistible lead?

Using trigger moments.

You see, we all have problems we’re struggling with at any given time…

But we’re not usually thinking about them actively.

It’s only when a trigger moment happens that our pain is brought to the forefront.

For example:

  • Someone who’s broke being forced to check their bank account

  • Someone who’s struggling to lose weight going to the beach with friends

  • Someone who hates their 9 to 5 waking up to an alarm

  • Someone who’s struggling to find a partner getting ghosted on Tinder

Each of these moments is infused with so much emotion that they instantly resonate with the prospect and suck them into reading more.

So next time you’re writing a piece of copy, start by listing out all the trigger moments you can think of.

Then pick the juiciest one and make that the focus of your lead.

Quote of the Day

“In the end, everything will be okay. And if it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.”
— John Paul Dejoria

Setbacks are part of the game.

But you can only be defeated if you choose to give up.
