Get smarter on AI in 5 mins

What is generative AI? Will our jobs be replaced by ChatGPT? Which tools should we be testing? How long before Skynet comes online and the robots take over the world?

We've got a lot of questions about artificial intelligence and how it's going to impact the freelance economy. That's why we read Synthetic Mind.

Each week, they send out a short 5-min memo with the latest on what's happening in AI.

Making the Rounds

  • TikTok banned in Big Sky Country. Montana passed a bill on Friday becoming the first to ban TikTok statewide. The bill doesn't go into effect until January 1, 2024, and we're guessing there may be one or two teeny tiny legal challenges before then. But if upheld, it could set the stage for other states to follow suit with a total TikTok ban.

  • Twitter Blue subscribers can now post 10,000 character tweets and use bold and italic formatting. Twitter and Substack are not the star-crossed lovers they used to be. First, Substack launched its new Notes feature, threatening Twitter's dominance over short-form text content. And now, Twitter's launching a long-form option for Blue subscribers, which allows for up to 10,000 characters as well as bold and italic formatting, along revamped monetization options.

  • 7 content writing trends for 2023. Generative AI, chat-based search, and algorithmic suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to creating content in 2023. Read this to discover the 7 biggest trends in content writing for this year.

Working With Clients

The 90-Day Follow Up

Most freelancers go radio silent once the project's done and the invoice is paid.

But the easiest sale you can make is to a past client because they already know, like, and trust you.

So make a point to follow up 90 days later.

Not only does this signal to clients that you value the relationship...

But it can often lead to more work.

Use a simple subject line like "Checking in" and keep your message short.

Ask them how business is going and what they're working on.

Simple gestures like these will help grow your freelance business and set you apart as a service provider.

Mindset Shift of the Week

"My clients love to spread the good word about me."

Landing new clients can feel like an uphill battle sometimes.

But when you routinely exceed expectations, past clients will happily sing your praises to their friends, colleagues, and business partners.

This goodwill builds up over time and comes back to you in unexpected ways.

So think of each new client and project you take on as planting a seed in your reputational garden.

That's how you transform an empty plot of land into a lush oasis.

One seed at a time.
